What Are DNS Records?

A Record

Maps a hostname to an IPv4 address.

AAAA Record

Maps a hostname to an IPv6 address.

MX Record

Identifies email servers responsible for receiving mail.

TXT Record

Stores text used for domain verification, email authentication, and other purposes.

CNAME Record

Points one hostname to another hostname.

NS Record

Identifies authoritative name servers for a DNS zone.

Troubleshoot Common DNS Issues

Website Not Loading

Check A and AAAA records for the intended server addresses, CNAME records for aliases, and NS records for the correct DNS provider. DNS is one possible cause; hosting or application issues may also prevent a website from loading.

Business Email Not Working

Review MX records to confirm the receiving mail servers. TXT records used for SPF and DMARC, plus TXT or CNAME records for DKIM, can help identify authentication issues. Delivery can also depend on the mail service itself.

Domain Verification Problems

Compare the TXT or CNAME record requested by your service with the hostname and value in DNS. A record added under the wrong hostname or at an inactive DNS provider may not be found.

DNS Changes Not Updating

Check that changes were made at the authoritative DNS provider. Cached answers may remain until their TTL expires; different resolvers can show different values during an update.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a DNS lookup?

A DNS lookup asks a DNS resolver for records associated with a domain or hostname. The results show values used to connect websites, route email, and verify services.

Is this DNS lookup tool free?

Yes. Hostingcone’s DNS Lookup Tool is free to use and does not require registration.

What is the difference between A and CNAME records?

An A record maps a hostname directly to an IPv4 address. A CNAME record makes one hostname an alias of another hostname, whose DNS records are then resolved.

How do I check MX records for my domain?

Enter your domain in the tool and select MX records. Review the mail server hostnames and priorities, then compare them with your email provider’s instructions.

Why are my DNS changes not showing?

Your resolver may still have cached an earlier answer. Changes made at the wrong DNS provider, an incorrect hostname, or incomplete nameserver updates can also cause older or unexpected results.

How long does DNS propagation take?

Timing varies with record TTLs, resolver caches, and registrar or registry processing for nameserver changes. Updates may become visible quickly or take longer; there is no single guaranteed propagation time.

Can I check DNS records for any domain?

You can query public DNS records for a valid domain or hostname. For root domains, the tool also checks a selected set of common hostnames. These checks are not a complete DNS zone inventory. Private records are not publicly accessible, and a missing answer may mean the record does not exist or a query failed.
